Like everyone in the IT world, you need to retrieve the build number of Windows 10, but as you’ve learned along the way: this is a very creative telenovela with a lot of plot twist… At first, it was 6.3, then it became 10 but was no more a number but a string!!?? Then they introduced build OS number like 10.0.17134.320 and build version number like 2004 and until the next move, we are now using something 'different' like 20H2!
As always, Microsoft is never disappointing, so they made a new registry key (forget about ReleaseId) !!!
If you dive into the registry to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion you will find a new registry key called DisplayVersion referencing a 20H2 Build number... You will also notice that ReleaseId is now a true rebel (a la Steve Job)...
That’s all for today, you can now go and edit your queries, GPO filters, reports, dashboards, and scripts to make them up to date. Let's hope that Guadalupe will finally fall in love with Manuel Fuentes Guerra it could really impact the build name in a positive way! Until then, See you!
