Back in 2009 highly respected Michael Murgolo (one of few member of the Deployment Guys that is still active on the blog front) wrote a script that the popularity goes fare beyond the deployment community space, it’s that script that allow to pin items to the task bar and the start menu (Yes, now you recognize…)

This was written during the windows 7 age and everything worked fine until came Windows 8 where Microsoft decided that pinning items to the start menu programmatically could not be allowed ! So they removed the feature until now, where Windows 10 is three weeks away from general availability: they put the feature back !!! (Hurray !!!)

Every technical details can be found on Michael’s post. Just be aware that the strings “Pin to task bar” and “Pin to Start” should be localized to work with non English Windows installation.

Here is the translation for French, feel free to report for other languages, I'll be glad to update the post !

French:

  • Pin to taskbar = Épingler à la barre des tâches
  • Pin to Start = Épingler à l’écran de démarrage

Happy pinning everyone !

11/13/2015 update: Every rose as its thorn and Windows is no exception : RTM version of windows 10 allowed to pin both on desktop and task bar but once you apply some security updates, the ability to pin to task bar disappear…
